Ask five vendors what a credit union website costs and you’ll get five evasive answers and zero numbers. We think that’s backwards. So let’s talk actual dollars and what drives them.
The three cost tiers
Custom agency builds — $25,000 to $100,000+. A fully bespoke site designed and coded from scratch. Powerful and tailored, but slow (often 4–9 months) and expensive to maintain. Right for large credit unions with big budgets and dedicated marketing teams.
Templated, credit-union-specific platforms — roughly $2,000 setup and a few hundred dollars a month. A professionally designed, financial-services-ready foundation customized with your brand. Fast to launch, predictable to budget, built for how small credit unions actually work.
Generic DIY builders — $20 to $50 a month. Cheap upfront, but not built for credit unions: no rate-management tools, weak accessibility, and you’re the designer, developer, and support team.
What actually drives the cost
- Custom vs. templated design — bespoke design is the single biggest cost driver. Templated-but-branded gets you 90% of the polish for a fraction of the price.
- Ongoing maintenance — hosting, security, backups, and updates are not optional. Some vendors bundle them; others surprise you later.
- Accessibility — ADA/WCAG done right takes real work. Skipping it is cheaper today and far costlier if a complaint lands.
- Support — when your rates change or something breaks, who fixes it, and how fast?
What affordable should actually include
An affordable credit union website should never mean a stripped-down one. At minimum your price should cover professional design, mobile and ADA readiness, easy rate editing, hosting, backups, security, and ongoing maintenance — with no surprise line items.
That’s the standard we set with CU Rocket: $1,995 setup, then $695/month, everything included — platform updates, hosting, backups, and ongoing WordPress maintenance. No hidden fees, and a team that’s served credit unions for 20+ years.
