For a credit union, trust is the whole business — and nothing erodes it faster than a compromised website. A hacked site can leak data, redirect members to scams, tank your search rankings, and take weeks to clean up. The good news: strong website security is mostly about consistent fundamentals, not a giant budget.
Start with HTTPS everywhere
Every page should load over HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate. It encrypts data in transit, it’s expected by members, and Google treats it as a ranking signal. There’s no excuse for a financial website without it.
Keep everything updated
Outdated software is the number-one way websites get hacked. Your platform, plugins, and themes need regular updates — not eventually, but promptly. Unpatched vulnerabilities are exactly what attackers scan for.
Use a web application firewall and monitoring
A firewall blocks malicious traffic before it reaches your site, and active malware scanning catches problems early. A site that goes months without scanning can be compromised long before anyone notices.
Back up automatically — and test restores
Automated daily backups stored off-site mean that if the worst happens, you can restore quickly instead of rebuilding. A backup you’ve never tested isn’t really a backup.
Lock down access
Strong, unique passwords, two-factor authentication for every admin, and removing old user accounts close the doors attackers walk through. Limit who has admin access to the people who truly need it.
Security shouldn’t be your team’s second job
Most small credit union teams don’t have time to babysit updates, firewalls, and backups on top of everything else — which is how sites drift into risk. The answer is a managed platform where security is handled for you.
Every CU Rocket site includes HTTPS, ongoing updates, backups, and maintenance as part of the package — so your team can focus on members, not patch notes. See what’s included or talk with our team.
